Our Inspirations
Helios was the personification of the Sun in ancient Greek religion and myth. A second-generation Titan, he was a powerful and revered deity, though not one of the twelve Olympians who resided on Mount Olympus. His daily journey across the sky in a fiery chariot was a fundamental aspect of the Greek understanding of the cosmos.
Powers and Symbols
As the god of the sun, Helios's primary power was the control of daylight and warmth. He was also considered the god of sight and a guardian of oaths. His symbols include:
- The Sun Chariot: His most iconic symbol, representing his daily journey.
- The Aureole: A radiant crown or halo of sunbeams.
- Horses: His four fiery steeds.
- The Whip and Globe: Symbols of his control and domain.
- Heliotropium (Sunflower) and Ripened Fruit: Plants associated with the sun.
Worship and the Colossus of Rhodes
While not as widely worshipped as the Olympian gods, Helios had significant cult centers, most notably on the island of Rhodes. The Rhodians considered him their patron deity. To celebrate their victory over a siege, they erected a colossal bronze statue of Helios, known as the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Completed in 280 BCE, the statue stood approximately 33 meters (108 feet) high but was destroyed by an earthquake in 226 BCE.
In Roman mythology, Helios was identified with Sol. His worship saw a resurgence in the later Roman Empire, with the establishment of the Sol Invictus ("Unconquered Sun") cult.
