Our Inspirations
Ares was the son of Zeus, the king of the gods, and his wife Hera. His siblings included Hephaestus, Hebe, and Eileithyia.
His most famous romantic entanglement was his long-standing and passionate affair with Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who was married to his brother, Hephaestus. Their union was a scandalous secret among the gods until Hephaestus cleverly caught them in an unbreakable golden net and exposed them to the ridicule of the other Olympians.
Ares and Aphrodite had several children who embodied different aspects of their parents' domains:
- Deimos (Terror) and Phobos (Fear): His twin sons who often accompanied him into battle.
- Eros: The god of love (in some versions of his parentage).
- Anteros: The god of requited love.
- Harmonia: The goddess of harmony and concord.
Mythology
Ares features in several myths, though often in a diminished or defeated role. During the Trojan War, he sided with the Trojans but was famously wounded by the mortal hero Diomedes, who was aided by Athena. Crying out in pain, Ares fled to Mount Olympus to be healed, much to the disgust of Zeus. He was also once captured by two giants, the Aloadae, and imprisoned in a bronze jar for thirteen months until he was rescued by Hermes.
Symbols and Worship
Ares's primary symbols are directly linked to warfare and aggression:
- The Spear and Helmet: His essential weapons and armor.
- The Dog: Associated with its fierce and brutal nature.
- The Vulture: A bird of prey that scavenges on battlefields.
- The Boar: Known for its ferocity and strength.
